Red 'bumbles' don't help all handicapped

We are glad Melanie Hoeffner wrote to her Oct. 18 letter to the editor. My husband and I too wondered how the red bumbles on the sidewalk between the handicapped space and the door of a restaurant are supposed to be of help. You can't get the wheel of a walker, cane or wheelchair to go between them forcing you to go over them and lose your balance.

Some restaurants have a metal threshold as you enter, in poor condition, causing the handicapped person to be pushed in a wheelchair backward.

I was told the red bumbles were put there for a blind person to "feel" the curb is near. Makes no sense.

On the plus side, someone from the restaurant always is there to hold the door open for you, and patrons of the restaurant are more than willing to help.
