Dold wins back 10th District seat, defeats Schneider

Former Republican Congressman Robert Dold of Kenilworth is headed back to Washington, unseating incumbent Brad Schneider on Tuesday in a tough race for the 10th District seat.

"I could not be more excited to represent you again in the U.S. Congress," Dold told a celebratory crowd at Austin's Saloon and Eatery in Libertyville. "You believed in our campaign and our shared vision for getting our country back on track."

Dold was ahead of Schneider all night, and the Deerfield Democrat conceded from his Election Night gathering at the Northbrook Hilton hotel.

"Tonight we fell short of our goal, but we came incredibly close," Schneider told the crowd.

Unofficial results showed Dold leading 92,903 to 86,325. Ballots from 418 of 419 precincts in Lake and Cook counties have been counted, with the missing precinct in Cook.

Two years ago, Dold was the freshman incumbent and Schneider was the victorious challenger.

This time, however, Schneider didn't benefit from the Democratic voting surge that came out to support President Obama's re-election.

Schneider ran a very negative campaign on TV and in mailers, attacking Dold's votes to repeal or defund the Affordable Care Act and his stances on other hot-button issues.

Dold said Schneider hasn't accomplished much in his time in office.

The 10th District includes parts of Cook and Lake counties.
