Algonquin police chief to retire in December

Algonquin Police Chief Russell Laine intends to retire in December after serving in the position for more than 25 years.

Laine, who has been in law enforcement since 1976, has been Algonquin's chief of police since 1985. He also was previously the chief of police in Bartlett and in Edgerton, Wisconsin.

"It has been an honor to serve the residents of Algonquin and to work with the high level of professionals who are committed to making Algonquin the wonderful community it is to live in, to raise a family and to work in," Laine said in a news release. "I am extremely proud to have been a member of the Algonquin Police Department."

Laine has worn many hats throughout his career. Among the positions he's filled, he has served as president of the McHenry County Chiefs of Police Association, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, according to the news release.

In 2007, he earned the Law Enforcement Recognition award from the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, and he was "instrumental in introducing" the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics in Algonquin and McHenry County. He has also lectured both nationally and internationally on topics such as police ethics.
