St. Viator nets Class 2A regional title

St. Viator got ahead, and managed to stay there.

The Lions took a 2-goal lead over Grayslake Central on Saturday in the Chicago Amundsen regional in Class 2A boys soccer postseason play, then held off the Rams 2-1 to claim a regional crown.

St. Viator's Zach Gyuricza scored the first goal, in the game's first minute.

The East Suburban Catholic Conference champs extended the lead to 2-0 on a 34th-minute goal from Anthony Pineda, with an assist from Aidan Williams.

Johnny Madrid scored in the 58th minute for Grayslake Central.

The Lions earned a spot in Wednesday's 4:30 p.m. sectional semifinal at Grayslake Central against the winner of the Lakes regional. Marian Central and Grayslake North will compete in the second game at Grayslake Central on Wednesday.
