Diabetes Scholars host 5K in Palatine Saturday

The Diabetes Scholars Foundation is hosting a 5K run/walk on Sweetest Day, Saturday, Oct. 18, at Towne Square, near the intersection of Smith and Slade streets in downtown Palatine.

The race begins at 8 a.m. Registered runners will receive a goody bag, food and the top finishers will receive medals.

Mary Podjasek, the foundation's president and executive director, said proceeds from the event will go to the foundation, which awards scholarships to students with Type 1 diabetes. In the past seven years, the foundation has awarded almost $900,000 in college scholarships. The group has received more than 2,600 applications for this year's scholarships, Podjasek said.
