'A revolving door is not the answer'

To the editor: In response to a recent letter in the Neighbor Fencepost, I don't believe the combined 78 years of service on the Arlington Heights Village Board is a bad thing or a reason for term limits.

The residents of our village are extremely lucky to have public servants who continue to do this important job year after year. These men and women bring to the board a high level of experience, wisdom and a historical viewpoint that is immensely valuable. They work together with integrity and civility which is not the case everywhere. The business of the village gets done.

You may not like every decision this board makes and neither do I, but the answer isn't to get rid of the good with the bad. What will make a difference is an involved community of voters. Attend a board meeting or consider running for village board yourself or joining one of the many boards or commissions in Arlington Heights. There are many opportunities to get involved.

Imposing term limits is somewhat of a knee-jerk response. It may make you feel better that those elected can only serve two terms, but you lose experience and continuity in the process. A revolving door of new board members is not the answer.
