Sabotaged air traffic center to reopen Monday
The Federal Aviation Administration says it expects to reopen its Aurora air traffic control facility as planned on Monday after a two-week shutdown.
The facility was closed down on Sept. 26 when authorities say a contract employee cut cables and set fire to a basement telecommunications room. The disruption forced an hourslong shutdown of O'Hare and Midway international airports and resulted in the cancellation of thousands of flights.
The facility's air traffic duties were transferred to other sites around the region.
In a weekend update, the FAA says technicians are continuing end-to-end testing of new equipment to prepare for a gradual transition back to full operations from Sunday night to Monday morning.
The agency says it is closely monitoring weather forecasts, which say thunderstorms are possible Monday.
