1 dead, 22 injured when Maine hayride flips

MECHANIC FALLS, Maine - A teenager is dead and two others are in critical condition after a Halloween-themed hay ride careened down a hill and crashed in the Maine woods.

A state police spokesman says a 17-year-old girl died of injuries sustained when the Jeep hauling the hay wagon lost control Saturday night. The wagon went down a steep hill, crashed into a tree and overturned.

Authorities say a teenage boy and the driver were also badly hurt. Twenty other passengers were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Police say a mechanical problem may have contributed to the accident. State fire marshals inspect and license mechanical amusement rides in Maine, but hayrides do not require such licensing.

The accident occurred at Harvest Hills Farm in Mechanic Falls, about 25 miles southwest of Augusta.
