Pregnant Elgin woman dies after head-on crash

A 20-year-old Elgin woman was five months pregnant when she died following a head-on crash Tuesday morning, her mother said.

Cynthia Vega was on her way to pick up her boyfriend from his overnight shift at work when the crash happened at about 7 a.m., her mother, Noemi Vega, said.

Vega, who was pronounced dead at Presence St. Joseph's Hospital in Elgin, was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima westbound on Highland Avenue when it traveled over the centerline near Lyle Avenue, Elgin Police Cmdr. Dan O'Shea said in a news release.

Her vehicle struck a 2014 Honda Civic driven by a 28-year-old woman from Elgin, who was seriously injured and transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital, police said.

Cynthia Vega had picked a name for her baby, Yaslina Noemi, after finding out her gender about two weeks ago, her mother said Tuesday afternoon while surrounded by relatives and friends who came to pay their condolences at Cynthia's grandmother's house.

Cynthia's dog was in the car with her and survived the crash, her mother said.

Her daughter's boyfriend had planned to surprise Cynthia by proposing marriage in December during a trip to Puerto Rico, Noemi Vega said.

“She was very responsible,” her mother said. “She was very thoughtful, always thinking of others. She just always tried to help me in whatever she can.”

Cynthia graduated from Larkin High School and took one semester of classes at Elgin Community College before finding out she was pregnant, her mother said.

She planned to go back to school after the baby was born, and hoped to work in human resources or architecture, her mother said.

The Elgin Police Department's traffic unit is continuing its investigation.

Anyone with information pertinent to the crash is encouraged to call (847) 289-2661.
