Blackhawks voice helps Wauconda High celebrate 100th

A guest singer helped Wauconda High School students and teachers kick off a very special homecoming weekend Friday.

The voice of the Chicago Blackhawks, Jim Cornelison, sang the national anthem at a morning pep rally at the school, which is marking its centennial.

Math teacher Sara Flannigan, who's directing the homecoming festivities, said folks are "really excited and thrilled" to celebrate the school's 100th anniversary.

Wauconda High opened for the 1915-16 term on Slocum Lake Road, in what is now Wauconda Middle School, Principal Dan Klett said. The first graduating class received their diplomas in 1917.

The current campus at 555 N. Main St. was dedicated in 1962. Additions were made in 1976, 1999 and 2008.

To visually mark the centennial, officials commissioned a special logo for the year. The Bulldog mascot logo was redesigned, too.

More activities are planned, Klett said.

"We are working on a memory book that is for sale that will be available next August," Klett said. "We will be putting together stories and pictures from each decade to help tell the history of the school."

A homecoming parade is planned for 9 a.m. Saturday from Wauconda Middle School to the high school.

Other events include a 10:30 a.m. sophomore football game against North Chicago High, a 1 p.m. varsity football game against North Chicago and a 7:30 p.m. dance.
