Wisconsin voter ID opponents file reconsideration motion

MADISON, Wis. - Civil rights advocates have filed a petition asking a federal appeals court to reconsider a ruling that reinstated Wisconsin's voter photo identification law.

The American Civil Liberties Union and the Advancement Project are challenging the law. A federal judge blocked the law earlier this year but a three-judge panel from the 7th Circuit ruled Friday that Wisconsin election officials could implement the law while they mull the case.

The two civil rights groups filed a petition late Tuesday night asking the court to reconsider Friday's ruling en banc, a proceeding that usually involves around 10 judges rather than the three that usually decide cases. The groups argued the ruling will create confusion ahead of the November elections.

The court rarely grants such en banc requests.
