Sale brilliant again in Sox' 1-0 win over A's

Since joining the White Sox late in the 2010 season, Chris Sale has yet to experience playoff baseball.

The left-hander settled for the next best thing Thursday afternoon at chilly U.S. Cellular Field.

While the Oakland A's are fading, they are still in the race for a wild-card berth.

Sale played the role of spoiler while pitching 8 brilliant innings in the Sox' 1-0 win over the Athletics.

While lowering his ERA to 1.99 - which leads the American League - Sale (12-3) allowed just 2 hits and had 9 strikeouts.

"It's fun seeing Sale pitch anytime, and for these guys (A's), I think they are just trying to win games anyway they can," manager Robin Ventura said. "So for Chris, it's a fun time to watch him compete against a team like this."

After Sale threw 110 pitches, Jake Petricka came on in the ninth inning and recorded his 13th save.

Marcus Semien broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run off A's starter Scott Kazmir leading off the sixth inning.
