Community High School goes 'wild' for homecoming week

Community High School District 94 invites alumni, retired staff and the community to enjoy the festivities during homecoming week.

Student Council members have been busy planning events for Monday to Saturday, Sept. 15 to 20. The theme chosen for this year is "Wild, Wild West Chicago."

The hallways and windows of Community High School have been decorated by student clubs and organizations and were to be unveiled on Monday. Students begin the week of dress days by wearing cowboy boots to school. At 7 p.m., Future Business Leaders of America will host a student dodgeball tournament in the Bishop Gym, 326 Joliet St., Entrance C, West Chicago. Admission is free.

Tuesday will find students dressing in flannel shirts to continue the Wild, Wild West Chicago theme. Students can tailgate before a variety of sports: a girls tennis match begins at 4:15 p.m. at the tennis courts, girls volleyball plays at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the small gym and Bishop Gym, and a boys soccer match tournament game starts at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Stadium if the team advances. Admission to the sporting events is free.

Students will be donning cowboy hats on Wednesday. At 7:30 p.m., Memorial Stadium will be transformed into an outdoor movie theater. Students voted to show the movie "Remember the Titans." The Creative Writing Club and girls cross country will sell beverages and snacks.

A variety of clothing will be worn on Thursday as students represent their clubs and sports. No evening events are planned for students as the Parent Open House is scheduled at 7 p.m.

Friday will be the busiest day of the week. Students will wear their squad or powder puff shirts for dress day. Students will be on a half-day schedule, with the homecoming pep assembly taking place in the morning. Students are dismissed at noon, and the Food Fest begins immediately near Entrance H. Student clubs will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers, tamales, walking tacos, beverages, snacks and desserts. The public is welcome to participate.

The 2014 homecoming parade steps off at 12:30 p.m. from the west parking lot. Led by the West Chicago police and fire departments, the parade will go south on Wood Street and turn east onto Ann Street. The parade will continue south on Joliet Street, turn east on Hazel Street, south on Bishop Street and west on Forest Avenue, passing Leman Middle School and Gary Elementary School. It will turn north on Joliet Street, turn west on Ann Street, and north on Wood Street, ending at Memorial Stadium.

The student class floats will be on display through the varsity Homecoming game. Parade participants include: Homecoming Court (Pep Club), Superintendent Doug Domeracki, Principal Moses Cheng and Assistant Principal Peter Martino, marching band, teachers and support staff, NHS/Scholastic Bowl, Horticulture Club/Club Green, orchestra, tennis, boys cross-country/track, InterAct Club, football, student council, OLA'AS, Sole Steppers, Gay/Straight Alliance, Creative Writing Club, Future Business Leaders of America, soccer, Art Club, Photo Club, volleyball, poms, WeGo Drama, speech team, cheerleaders, wrestling, WeGo Buddies and Equestrian Club.

At 2 p.m., the Staff/WeGone Reception begins in the LRC to welcome back retired teachers. Also at 2 p.m., all are welcome to watch the Powder Puff football games at Memorial Stadium. Admission is free.

The sophomore football game begins at 5 p.m. at the stadium, with the varsity game against Elgin beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. The Wildcat Booster Club will be selling pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos and more at the concession stand, and spirit wear will be available.

Culminating the "Wild, Wild, West Chicago" homecoming week, the homecoming dance for students begins at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Bishop Gym.
