Lake Forest Hospital Expands Neurosciences Program

Northwestern Medicine has expanded its neurological sciences program at Lake Forest Hospital with the addition of neurosurgeon Patrick A. Sugrue, MD, and neurologist Tomi Ashaye, MD, and an expanded presence by Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Department of Neurological Surgery, which is led by renowned neurosurgeon Andrew T. Parsa, MD, PhD, and is the best neurosurgery program in Illinois and the 7th best program in the nation as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

"With the addition of Drs. Sugrue and Ashaye and the Northwestern Memorial team to our outstanding neurologists already on staff, Lake Forest Hospital offers highly advanced and specialized neurological care and surgery to our patients in the north suburbs and Lake County," said Michael G. Ankin, MD, FACP, FCCP, the hospital's vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer. "Each of these physicians brings expertise in clinical care and surgery along with cutting-edge research at the forefront of advances in neuroscience."

The expanded Lake Forest Hospital neurosciences team, along with the hospital's Parkinson's rehabilitation program and sleep medicine program, provides comprehensive neurology services to patients in northern Cook and Lake Counties. Neurosurgeons work closely with neurologists, nurses, and physical therapists to offer an integrated approach to treating and managing injuries and diseases affecting the brain, spine, peripheral nerves and the arteries of the head and neck.

Andrew T. Parsa, MD, PhD, isan internationally-renowned neurosurgeon specializing in complex tumors of the brain and spine and chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He initiated one of the first vaccine studies for brain tumor patients and is currently the study chair for the largest randomized brain tumor vaccine trial ever to be funded by the National Cancer Institute.

Parsa received his undergraduate degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale, medical and graduate degrees at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, and neurosurgical training at Columbia University. He serves on the board of directors for the Society of Neuro-Oncology, is an elected member of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons and is chair-elect for the executive committee of the joint section on tumors for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

"The expanded neurosurgery program at Lake Forest Hospital presents an exciting opportunity for our team from Northwestern Memorial to provide the best care possible to patients in Lake County, closer to their homes," said Parsa. "Advancements in neurosciences have improved our ability to treat and manage the diseases of the brain, neck and spine; our goal is to bring the research expertise of Northwestern coupled with a clinical focus to our patients in Lake County."

Neurosurgeon Patrick A. Sugrue, MD, joins Lake Forest Hospital from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., where he completed a fellowship in orthopaedic surgery to enhance his training and surgical skills from the perspective of orthopaedic medicine. He received his medical degree from Wayne State University Medical School in Detroit. He completed an internship and a residency at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he served as chief resident and clinical instructor in the Department of Neurological Surgery. He also completed a fellowship in adult and pediatric spine surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.

Sugrue has advanced surgical training in adult spinal deformity and adult minimally invasive techniques from Northwestern Memorial Hospital. His work has been published more than 20 times in peer-reviewed journals and he has made numerous regional and national presentations on neurosurgery. His recent publications focus on spinal surgery and have been published in academic journals such as Spine and Neurosurgery.

Tomi Ashaye, MD, joins Lake Forest Hospital and Northwestern Medical Group after completing a neurophysiology fellowship at Rush University Medical Center, where she served as co-chief neurology resident. She completed her medical degree at Chicago Medical School and completed a neurology residency at Rush University Medical Center. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and a member and fellow of the American Epilepsy Society. Ashaye will be expanding the epilepsy program at Lake Forest Hospital in collaboration with the epilepsy team at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
