Rauner gives nearly $1 million to credit union, foundation

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner has invested nearly $1 million in a credit union aimed at providing loans to small, black-owned businesses on Chicago's South Side.

The venture capitalist stopped Friday at South Side Community Federal Credit Union for paperwork.

Rauner says $200,000 is a donation to a related foundation and $800,000 was deposited in an account. The money will be used for small business loans. Rauner says he'll earn a small percentage of interest.

Since the multimillionaire made the pledge weeks ago, critics have claimed he's trying to buy votes in the competitive race against Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn.

Rauner dismissed that, saying he's continuing his practice of giving to causes and his action helps create jobs.

The credit union's president confirms the money was wire transferred.
