Grayslake Historical Society to mark WWI anniversary
The Grayslake Historical Society begins its fall season of monthly programs with a session about letters from a Grayslake soldier as the world marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. Society President Charlotte Renehan will talk about her father's letters home during the "Great War" at a free meeting to be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10, in the Community Room of the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum, 164 Hawley St., Grayslake. Renehan's father, Charles W. Kuebker, ran the family farm in Grayslake. At the age of 24, he was drafted into the Army in May 1918 to fight in the war. The United States became involved in World War I, on April 6, 1917. Renehan will talk about her father's letters home to his parents, Charles F. and Mary, who lived on the farm. The letters came from his Army base in Texas and later from France. Refreshments will be served.
