Cougars notch record 90th victory

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars became the first team in franchise history to record 90 victories, reaching the milestone with a 6-1 rain-shortened win over Cedar Rapids on Friday night.

The Cougars (45-22, 90-47) put together 6 unanswered runs to defeat the Kernels (41-26, 72-65) at Perfect Game Field.

The Cougars grabbed their first lead with an RBI hit from Yasiel Balaguert and a sacrifice fly from Victor Caratini in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Trey Martin belted a solo homer to left and Jeimer Candelario blasted a 2-run shot to right.

Starter and winner Jonathan Martinez (11-5) worked 5⅓ innings and allowed 1 run.

The Cougars wrap up their regular season with a three-game series against the Peoria Chiefs at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva. Daury Torrez (11-6, 2.71 ERA) will start for the Cougars against Peoria's Alex Reyes (6-7, 3.77) at 6:30 p.m.
