Elgin protesters seek justice for Brown

About 20 members of Occupy Elgin and the Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice rallied on Saturday for justice in the death of black teenager Michael Brown.

The killing of the unarmed teenager recently during a confrontation with police set off a firestorm of violent protests in Ferguson, Missouri, which led the local groups to hold up signs and hand out fliers on the corner of Kimball Street and Grove Avenue before a thunderstorm hit.

Mary Shesgreen of Elgin helped to organize the group to focus on the "horrible shooting and horrible police reaction."

Traci Ellis, an attorney and board member for Elgin Area School District U-46, was part of the protest and said she believed in Martin Luther King's mission for peace.

"I have two adult sons and I wouldn't want them to be caught 'walking while black' and be assaulted or killed," she said. "That is so appalling to me."

A St. Louis County grand jury began reviewing evidence in the Brown case earlier this week. The proceedings could take weeks.
