Expect layoffs after Walgreen's decision to stay
I agree totally with your conclusion, but not with other comments in your Aug. 8 editorial about Walgreen's decision to stay in the U.S.
1) You do realize that "moving" in this case is a tax/paper exercise. No people actually move. Read about Medtronic in Minnesota. Staffers in Europe rarely see American executives.
2) Now that Walgreen cannot save $4 billion, there will be layoffs and less taxes paid by some employees.
3) Who exactly has a stake in Walgreen's success who isn't a shareholder? Customers already have options, so this comment is a head scratcher. Walgreen was unquestionably pressured by President Obama, and the Justice Department would make life miserable and costly for the company for the next two years, so they had no other real choice. I hope they will send stipend checks to all the Walgreen employees who get laid off not for poor performance.
