Police: Woman found dead on highway in Rockford

ROCKFORD - Winnebago County officials say a Rochelle woman has been found dead on a highway after being hit by a semitrailer.

The Rockford Register Star reports the 29-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead Sunday after emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene

A preliminary Illinois State Police investigation determined she was struck by a tractor-trailer traveling southbound on Interstate 39 just after 1:30 a.m.

Police haven't released the woman's name or filed any charges. The death is under investigation and an autopsy is pending.
