Euro Charline makes history in Beverly D.

The young lady from England made a real catch on Saturday in Arlington Heights.

Racing seventh on the final turn, Euro Charline caught up to the pace-setting La Tia and I'm Already Sexy at the top of the stretch.

She then went on to grab a three-quarters length victory over favored and hard-charging Stephanie Kitten's in the $750,000 Grade I Beverly D. at Arlington International Racecourse.

The 3-year-old daughter of Myboycharlie became the youngest distaffer to win the prestigious Beverly D., which was first run in 1987 in memory of the late wife of Arlington chairman Richard Duchossois.

Sent off at 10-1, the English-bred Euro Charline returned $23.60 as the sixth betting choice in the 11-horse field.

She completed the 1-3/16ths miles over the turf course in 1:55.3 becoming the fifth straight foreign-bred winner of the race.

Winning owner Barry Irwin is hardly a stranger to Arlington where he won the 1993 Arlington Million with Star of Cozzene.

He gave all the credit to his trainer Marco Botti for Saturday's win in the Festival race with the second-highest purse.

"All the credit goes to Marco," he said. "I thought he was crazy to be honest. No 3-year-old has ever won this race. This was all Marco's idea. He has been bugging me for a month to run here and I finally gave in."

Marco's wife and assistant Lucia saddled the horse at Arlington while Marco was in England where his Seismos won the Group III Geoffrey Freer Stakes earlier in the day.

"My husband challenged me after he won that one," Lucie said with a laugh. "He said. 'Now let's see if you can have a winner over there.' "

Indeed, Charline Euro was a winner for the fourth time in seven starts, giving the Bottis a doubles in stakes action for Saturday.

On the final turn, Stephanie's Kitten was last in the 11-horse field.

But she began a furious run along the rail before jockey Lanfranco Dettori had to swing the mare to the outside at mid-stretch and just missed catching Euro Charline.

"It's frustrating," said Chad Brown who trains Stephanie's Kitten for Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey. "I think she was the best again. It's two races in a row where she has had unfortunate trips. But that's racing. We'll just keep going with her."

Said Dettori: "I wove my way through but the winner got a dream run for free on me and it was over. I warmed her up well but age is telling now and the young ones are more spring chickens."

No one was as young as Euro Charline, who will stay in the United States.

"She'll be with Todd Pletcher (today)," said Irwin, who directs Team Valor. "She will be pointed toward the Queen Elizabeth II stakes (at Keeneland in October)."

Pletcher's stable hands might notice one quirk.

"She's a pretty headstrong filly," Lucie Botto said. "We'll have trouble getting the bridle on in the mornings. They had a real hard time taking her temperature before the plane flight here. But it's more a training thing. Luckily, there are no issues on race day."
