Wheeling cop, driver hurt during Milwaukee Ave. traffic stop
A Wheeling police officer was injured Friday when her parked squad car was struck during a traffic stop on Milwaukee Avenue, police said.
About 11:30 a.m. the officer was sitting in her squad car behind a truck, in the right northbound lane on the 600 block of South Milwaukee Avenue, Deputy Police Chief Todd Wolff said.
An adult man driving a third vehicle crashed into the back of the officer's squad car, Wolff said.
Both the man and the officer were injured and were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Their injuries are not life-threatening, Wolff said.
A fourth car also was involved in the accident but the driver was not injured, Wolff said.
Meanwhile, two passenger cars and a police car were taken away on tow trucks. The rear of the police car had serious damage.
The northbound lane closest to the right curb was expected to remain closed until about 4:30 p.m. while police and the Major Crash Assistance Team investigate.
Police have not issued any citations as of Friday afternoon and have not released the officer's name, pending notification of her family. The investigation continues into the cause of the crash.
