District 50 to host proof of residency event Aug. 12-13

Woodland Elementary District 50 hosts its eighth annual proof of residency event from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, and Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Woodland Middle School gymnasium, 7000 Washington St., Gurnee.

The purpose of the event is to confirm that all students attending Woodland schools are District 50 residents. There is no advantage to attending a particular day or time. Expect longer lines on the first day.

New this year, class lists will not be posted as part of the proof of residency event. Your child's teacher name will be included in the information packet given out at the event. In the past, class lists were often photographed and posted on social media with no filter, which has raised concerns about ensuring student confidentiality.

"We wanted families and students to be aware of this change in advance," said Superintendent Joy A. Swoboda. "It is our role to protect student privacy and we appreciate our community understanding this important change."

During the residency event, parents will be given their children's school, class and bus information. Families will have the opportunity to pay fees, deposit funds in lunch accounts, obtain information about PTA, learn about the Woodland Educational Foundation, obtain forms for fee waivers and free or reduced lunch applications.

In addition, spirit wear will be available for purchase during the event. The PTA accepts credit cards, cash and money orders. Checks will not be accepted. Spirit wear will not be sold at sneak preview or during curriculum nights due to limited volunteers at these events. This will be the only chance to purchase spirit wear in the beginning of the 2014-15 school year.

PTA will also offer a very limited number of school supply packs available on a first-come, first-serve basis, as well as book socks during the residency event. Credit cards will be accepted for both purchases.
