Barrington area cyclists, runners to support combat veterans

The Barrington Honor Ride and Run will have its fourth annual event Sunday, Aug. 17, at Citizens Park, in Barrington. Our nation's bravest warriors, Northwest suburban and Chicago area residents are taking to the starting line, in Barrington, to benefit wounded military involved in cycling rehabilitation programs through Ride2Recovery (R2R).

All monies raised through these nationwide, one-day Honor Rides are donated directly to R2R's Project Hero programs.

Barrington's event, the Barrington Honor Ride and Run, is unique in that it provides runners, families and kids an opportunity to participate through the 5K/10K runs as well as the kids bike loop and obstacle course. Past guests have included Medal of Honor Recipients Sal Giunta and Allen Lynch.

Entrants will have the opportunity to ride and run alongside our nations heroes, many of whom are directly involved with the R2R programs suffering from physical and mental challenges such as prosthetic and lost limbs, loss of mobility, traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Raleigh Bikes has joined forces with R2R to create custom made cycling equipment to help our heroes rise to the challenge and succeed. R2R programs offer our wounded a necessary and rewarding option on their journey toward rehabilitation.

BHRR 2014 provides the community an opportunity to show support, honor and gratitude.

Registration for the BHRR is at 6 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 7 a.m. At 7:15 a.m. bike entrants depart; 8 a.m. 5K/10K course begins. 10 a.m. is the Family Festival with adult and kid obstacle courses, live music by Underwater People and Darryl Markette. Barbecue food is courtesy of Kookers.
