East Dundee police still looking for 85-year-old's killer

East Dundee police said they planned to recanvass the neighborhood Monday night as they look for clues in the stabbing death of an 85-year-old woman.

Mildred “Dodie” Darrington, who lived alone at her home, was found dead early Friday. Authorities said she died sometime in the preceding 24 hours.

Police Chief Terry Mee said officers might continue talking to neighbors on Tuesday.

“We have a number of our people dedicated to this investigation, and we are being assisted, because of a mutual aid agreement, by the Kane County major crimes task force,” he said.

Task force members include investigators from Elgin, St. Charles, Carpentersville, West Dundee and Huntley, he said.

Investigators don't know if the murder was committed by a stranger or someone known to the victim, but residents are safe nonetheless, Mee said.

“My assessment is that there is no cause for continuing concern for the safety of the community at large,” he said.

Some neighbors said they were dissatisfied with the department's communication with residents after police released information Saturday about the murder.

Mee said he is aware of the discontent. “I understand that people are feeling that they don't have enough information,” he said.

“Unfortunately the information that I am sure they'd like to know is that we have someone in custody, but we do not at this time. Obviously our goal is to hold someone accountable of this murder of this unfortunate woman.”

Anyone with information is asked to call detective Dan Duda at (847) 428-4034.
