Trunk show to feature textiles
Fine Line Creative Arts Center presents a "One-of-a-Kind Trunk Show" from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 25, in the center's Kavanagh Gallery, 37W570 Bolcum Road, St. Charles.
American fiber artist John Marshall brings textiles bearing designs created with his katazome work and more.
One-of-a-kind items at the Trunk Show will range in price from $20 to $3,000. MasterCard and Visa will be accepted. Visit www.fineline.org for details.
"I'll have a full range of exquisite Japanese weaves including tapestry, jacquard, leno, velvets, and so on," said Marshall, as well as an extensive assortment "of my dye work and many traditional silk Japanese garments."
Marshall, who lives in California, is known internationally for using color and line to create one-of-a-kind art-to-wear.
To wear or to display Marshall's creations will be your biggest challenge, when you see the range of phenomenal patterns and colors this artist accomplishes using the traditional Japanese techniques of katazome (stencil dyeing) and tsutsugaki (cone drawing).
Katazome is paste resist surface design, which uses a paste made from rice flour that is pushed through a stencil to define a pattern on cloth. The paste resists dyes applied to the fabric to create designs.
Supplies also will be for sale, including fabric, dyes, DVDs, brushes, silk/hemp/gold yarns, Japanese shuttles, picks, and more.
