Joliet man to get new trial in death of infant

A Joliet man will stand trial again in the beating death of his girlfriend's 9-month-old son after a judge vacated a Will County jury's guilty verdict.

The Herald-News in Joliet reported that Judge Sarah Jones denied on Monday the request by prosecutors to uphold last year's conviction of 33-year-old Santos Loza in the death of Kevion Bender.

Jones presided over the trial and later determined that she'd made a mistake when she placed limits on Loza's attorneys during their cross-examination of his girlfriend, the infant's mother.

The child was killed in October of 2008. Loza was charged in 2010. Last September he was convicted and faced up to 100 years in state prison.
