South suburban boy drowns in park pool

Police in Bridgeview say a 6-year-old boy has drowned in a public swimming pool.

Police Chief Walter Klimek said lifeguards pulled Michael Duda of Justice from the shallow end of the Bridgeview Park District pool on Wednesday afternoon. He said the boy was unresponsive and couldn't breathe. Klimek said the boy was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The Cook County medical examiner said the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Klimek said the boy was at the pool as part of a park district summer camp program. He called the drowning a "tragic accident."

Police are continuing to investigate, but it appears lifeguards reacted quickly.
