District 70 teacher to attend prestigious math and science academy

Emily Maki, a gifted resource teacher at Adler Park School, has been selected to attend a prestigious math and science academy where she will network and trade tips with teachers from across the country.
An anonymous student recommended Maki for the Michelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy that will run July 20-25 at a hotel in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was one of 150 selected for the all-expense paid trip from a field of 1,100, and one of six teachers selected from Illinois.
"I am truly honored to be one of the teachers chosen to attend the Phil Mickelson ExxonMobil Academy, where I will be able to learn the newest strategies in teaching math and science," Maki said.
"While I am so excited to have been chosen by the foundation's selection panel, there is no greater honor than being nominated by one of my students for an experience such as this one. Thank you to the student who thought to recognize me. I hope that my experiences at this academy will inspire many more students to love math and science as much as I do."
The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy, supported by the National Science Teachers Association with members teaching the academy, was launched in 2005 to provide third-through fifth-grade teachers with tools to enhance curricula, an opportunity to network, as well as discover innovative ways to teach math and science.
More than 4,000 teachers have attended the academy, impacting the lives of nearly 300,000 students nationwide.
"I am thrilled at Emily's nomination to attend this amazing experience this summer," Adler Park Principal Kerri Bongle said.
"It is no surprise that she was nominated by a student. Miss Maki is a dedicated, passionate and caring teacher who really impacts all the students she sees throughout the school day. I am excited to hear about the experience and see the new and innovative ideas presented in her classroom next year."
