Buffalo Grove Fire Department to host blood drive

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department will host a blood drive from 8 a.m. through 2 p.m. on Friday, June 20, at Fire Station 26 at 1051 Highland Grove Drive.

The blood drive, held biannually and sponsored through LifeSource, is benefiting Highland Park firefighter Nathan Abbot's daughter Kylia who suffers from high-risk neuroblastoma. The disease, a nerve cell cancer mainly found in young children, must be treated with blood transfusions.

Wendy Durkin, a battalion chief with the Buffalo Grove Fire Department, said in an email that Kylia has been able to receive approximately 17 blood transfusions, making her well enough to receive a stem cell transplant.

Durkin said donors can sign up through LifeSource's website or show up to the fire station with identification to give blood.
