Bartlett police warn of IRS telephone scam

Bartlett police are warning residents of a telephone scam reported during the past few weeks, authorities said.

The scam involves callers claiming to be IRS agents or from the U.S. Treasury Department who call about money owed for back taxes or a problem with a tax return, Bartlett police said in a news release. The scam artists then demand immediate payment with a prepaid debit card, a prepaid Green Dot MoneyPak card or a wire transfer, according to the release.

The IRS never asks for credit card, debit card, or prepaid card information over the telephone, police said.
