Dist. 46 superintendent issues summer reading challenge

Elgin Area School District U-46 Superintendent José M. Torres issued his annual Summer Reading Challenge in a video message, encouraging every student to participate in the summer reading library programs offered at Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, Bartlett Public Library, and Poplar Creek Public Library in Streamwood.

This year's theme is "Paws to Read."

The two schools with the largest percentage of summer reading program finishers and the largest percentage jump from last year will be rewarded with a prize.

"Last year, we had approximately 2,400 students participate in our Summer Reading Challenge and this year, we want even more students to participate," said Torres. "I challenge you to read books that take you to faraway places, and also nonfiction educational books that help you learn - my favorites!"

U-46 teachers will distribute the Summer Reading logs before the end of school. The logs can also be found at www.u-46.org under Summer Reading Challenge. The webpage also includes Torres' video message and a helpful guide about which library serves each U-46 school.

U-46 will work with each of its libraries to calculate summer reading program finishers.
