Gurnee school, business celebrates National Doughnut Day
The 97th anniversary of National Doughnut Day was marked with, what else? Doughnuts.
Gurnee Donuts teamed up with Computer Systems Institute in Gurnee on Friday and delivered 300 doughnuts that were given to students and faculty. The treats were sold to the school at a discounted rate, officials said.
National Doughnut Day honors the Salvation Army "Lassies," who served on the front line in Europe during World War I, where they cooked food for the troops, event organizers said.
Doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the medal helmet of the soldier. This is where American infantry men got their nickname "Doughboys," organizers said.
"Computer Systems Institute and Gurnee Donuts wanted to supple doughnuts to the students to remind them why its important to give and share in the community," said Roxanne Peplow, director of student services.
