District 41 preparing to appoint new board member

A new school board member could be appointed as early as Monday in Glen Ellyn Elementary District 41.

The board is expected to vote to name one of 14 applicants to replace President Sam Black, whose resignation is effective at 5 p.m. June 10.

Black said he is stepping down because his family is moving to Florida where his wife is starting a new job.

"My family and I are sad to be leaving," Black said. "We loved it here in Glen Ellyn, but in the same vein, we're very excited to begin the next chapter of our lives. We look at it as a new adventure."

Communications Director Julie Worthen said the board interviewed 14 candidates for the vacancy.

Those seeking the spot are Patrick Brosnan, Stephanie Clark, Jeff Cooper, William Dallman, Margaret DeLaRosa, Edna Heatherington, Morgan Lyons, Kristin Massey, Ronald G. Pippin, Dana Sample, Elizabeth S. Skirvin, Lori W. Taylor, Chris Walter and Cathryn Wilkinson, Worthen wrote in an email.

The new member will serve until the next school board election in April 2015.

Black, a board member since May 2011, submitted his intent to resign on May 12. His fellow board members elected him president last spring.

"I became a board member because I wanted to be more involved in my children's education and I had an opportunity to do so," he said.
