Music notes: Electric Six playing Nellie's Friday

<b>Genre benders</b>

Detroit-based rock band Electric Six is one of those groups that fuses sonic elements from a wide variety of genres - glam, metal, punk and disco, among others - into a unique and cohesive sound. (Call it "Electric Six-Ness.") The group is touring behind its 2013 release, "Mustang," and a new record is on the way later this year. Electric Six will perform in the suburbs this weekend.

<b>Tasty pop sounds</b>

Can it really be more than 10 years since we were all shakin' it to Kelis' irresistible pop song, "Milkshake"? Kelis has stayed quite busy since, continuing to release sophisticated pop albums while also becoming a certified chef. She's touring now behind "Food," her acclaimed new album.

<b>UO returns</b>

Urge Overkill, the noisy, glammy, sarcastic rock band that went from Chicago-area favorite to worldwide phenomenon during the alternative 1990s, returns to the town of its birth for a show next week. Formed in the North suburbs in the latter half of the 1980s, the band attained superstardom after the release of its major-label debut, "Saturation," in 1993 and the appearance of "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon," the band's cover of a Neil Diamond song, on the "Pulp Fiction" film soundtrack in 1994. Urge Overkill went on hiatus near the end of that decade because of creative and personal tensions within the group. It reformed a few years ago and released "Rock And Roll Submarine," its first album in 16 years, in 2011. Urge will perform next week as part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of venerable Chicago rock club, Double Door.
