Local chefs gear up to fight hunger

Elgin, IL - On Monday, June 23, twenty local chefs and restaurants will embark on a mission to help Food For Greater Elgin fight hunger hardship in their community. The organization's "Pallet to Palate - A Food and Wine Tasting Event" will provide guests with an opportunity to "evoke your five senses with food, music, and art."

Food For Greater Elgin is a large, fast-growing, client choice food pantry serving 1,200 households per month, equating to 5,500 individuals in those households, half of whom are children.

"Clients have the unique opportunity to choose food in our warehouse just like they would in any grocery store. We promote a focus on dignity and choice versus offering pre-bagged food items," explained Sue Ericson, executive director. "Our warehouse provides families with aisles of food including fresh produce, meat, dairy, and shelf stable products. Many of the wonderful chefs at the event will be utilizing ingredients and food items that can be found in our pantry, hence 'Pallet to Palate'!"

Chefs and restaurants providing delectable samplings include The Anvil Club, In the Neighborhood, Alexander's Café, Al's Café, Elgin BBQ Pit, Chicks n Salsa, Nick's Pizza and Pub, Grand Victoria Casino, Blue Box Café, The Martini Room, Elgin Country Club, Café Roma, Elgin Community College Culinary Program, Cooper's Hawk, Elgin Public House, Gourmet Kernel, Rookies All American Pub & Grill, Simply Kabobs, The Cocoa Cabana, and Francesca's Campagna.

Gracious sponsors of this one-of-a-kind event include Jack and Marlene Shales, Otto, The Middleby Corporation, Seigle Family Foundation, Advocate Sherman Hospital, Greater Elgin Family Care Center, Palmer Foundation, Elgin State Bank, IHC Construction Companies LLC, and Proven Partners Group.

"Pallet to Palate" will take place at its venue sponsor, Elgin ArtSpace Lofts and HOTI Gallery, 51 Spring St. in downtown Elgin, on Monday, June 23, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Tickets are $40 per person. Visit FoodForGreaterElgin.org to purchase tickets and combat hunger in your community. You may also call Daryl Rubin (847) 931-9330, ext. 314 for information.
