Ride of Silence honors memory of Elk Grove cyclist
Elk Grove Village cyclists rode silently along local bike trails and streets last week to honor the memory of a cyclist struck and killed by a vehicle last year on Higgins Road.
The first Elk Grove Ride of Silence was held May 21, organized by Friends of Cycling in Elk Grove, a local cycling advocacy group, and members of the family of Rosaleen Waters, who died almost a year to the date ago as she was crossing Higgins Road near Route 53.
Similar rides are held all around the world to remember those who have been killed or injured while biking on public roadways. Organizers say the silent, slow-paced rides are also meant to show that cars and bikes can share the roads peacefully.
Mary Rudden, mother of Rose Waters, hand-stitched over 100 reflective arm bands that were given to participants in the Ride of Silence.

The Ride of Silence paused near the new Busse Woods trail pedestrian bridge, which opened in November over Higgins Road. Rose Waters' husband Tony placed a rose at the top of the bridge during the ride.
