Waubonsee College board OKs 3.75 percent pay increases for administrators

The president and vice presidents of Waubonsee Community College will be eligible to receive 3.75 percent pay raises, starting July 1.

The college's trustees approved the raises 6-0 Wednesday night, with one trustee absent.

There were no changes in the benefits.

Specific salary figures for President Christine Sobek and the vice presidents were not available. The raises will only be given to those administrators who meet or exceed performance expectations.

But in the Illinois Community College Board's annual compilation of salaries and benefits, Sobek was listed as making $222,480. A 3.75 percent raise would put her at about $230,800.

That 2013 compensation report listed her as receiving a $12,000 annuity, and employer-paid benefits worth $37,449. She received no retirement enhancements or extra-duty pay.

WCC President Richard Dickson said many factors were taken into consideration to come up with the 3.75 percent figure, including marketplace competition.

No information was available about the possible total cost of the raises.

In the 2013 ICCB report, Sobek ranked 10th in base pay amoong all public Illinois community college presidents. The presidents of College of DuPage, College of Lake County, Elgin, Harper, Triton and Oakton community colleges made more. The presidents of of Joliet Junior, McHenry County, Morton and Moraine Valley community colleges made less in base pay.

The president of neighboring Elgin Community College, which has an enrollment about the same as Waubonsee, was paid $225,553 base salary in the same period, plus $75,006 in benefits and a $10,000 annuity.

The president of another neighbor, College of DuPage, which has 2½ times WCC's enrollment, was paid $282,703 base salary, plus $128,436 in benefits and $74,311 in retirement enhancements.

Community college districts must report their salaries.
