Local Students Receives Pep Rally Before National Spelling Bee Finals
ComEd hosted a pep rally yesterday for three local students who will represent DuPage, Will and suburban Cook counties at the National Spelling Bee Finals in Washington, D.C. The students participated in a mock spelling bee competition as ComEd employees and elected officials from their hometowns wished the students good luck at the national competition, starting next week.
The students are Alia Abiad, suburban Cook County spelling bee champion and eighth-grader at McClure Junior High School in Western Springs, Meghana Kamineni, Will County spelling bee champion and eighth-grader at Homer Junior High School in Homer Glen (Kamineni lives in Lockport), and Nafisa Asad, DuPage County spelling bee champion and eighth-grader at Herrick Middle School in Downers Gove (Asad lives in Oak Brook).
This was the seventh consecutive year ComEd sponsored the DuPage County, Will County and suburban Cook County spelling bee champions. ComEd is covering all expenses for the three regional winners and their families to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals in Washington, D.C., from May 27 - 29.
Abiad and Kamineni are repeat champions as they represented suburban Cook County and Will County at last year's National Spelling Bee Finals. The pep rally took place at the ComEd Commercial Center in Oak Brook.
