Suspect charged in beating of Chicago priest

A man suspected of breaking into a church rectory on Chicago's South Side and beating and robbing an elderly Catholic priest in 2011 has been arrested.

A judge on Friday ordered 21-year-old Jerrell Harris of Chicago held in lieu of $500,000 bond during a hearing. He was formally charged with aggravated battery, home invasion and armed robbery.

Harris is one of two men suspected in the attack on the Rev. Daniel Mallette in the rectory of St. Margaret of Scotland Church. Mallette suffered broken ribs and other injuries.

Police say Harris was arrested Thursday as he was being paroled from Pinckneyville Correctional Center on another case. It was not immediately known if he has an attorney.

The second suspect has not been captured.
