Auditions and art shows

• Citadel Theatre Company has auditions for Shakespeare's romantic comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream" from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at 300 S. Waukegan Road, Lake Forest. Those auditioning should prepare a two-minute Shakespearean monologue. To book an audition slot, send an email to auditions@citadeltheatre.org.

• Elgin Community College Musical Theatre has auditions by appointment for the musical revue "Forever Plaid" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17. Open auditions are scheduled at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 15 and 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17. All auditions are held in Elgin Community College's Building H Arts Center in Room H245, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Performers should prepare a musical number from any Broadway show other than "Forever Plaid" and bring sheet music in a 3-ring binder for the accompanist that will be provided. Taped accompaniment or a cappella singing will not be permitted. Those auditioning should wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the dance audition. Auditions are open to ages 16 and up. • Hinsdale-based BAM Theatre seeks high school and college students to audition for its upcoming summer intensive production of the 1996 rock musical "Rent" on Saturday, May 17. BAM also seeks kids ages 5 to 17 to audition for its youth theater intensive production of the 1977 musical "Annie" on Sunday, May 18. • Victory Gardens seeks submissions for its 2014 IGNITION Festival of New Plays, which takes place from Monday through Sunday, July 21-27. The fourth IGNITION festival will create a productive environment for both emerging and established playwrights to explore and develop their new work. • Timber Street Theater Company has auditions for the 1992 Tony Award-Winning musical "Crazy for You" featuring music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, May 19-20, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 200 N. Plum Grove Road, Palatine. Prepare 32 bars from a contemporary show tune and be prepared to dance (bring tap shoes if you have them). (847) 254-4813.

• Elgin Summer Theatre has auditions for the award-winning musical "Rent" from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, May 19-21, at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. Those auditioning should be age 16 or older and be prepared to sing a 60-second selection from "Rent" or a rock power ballad a cappella. A dance sequence will also be taught. • Fair Lady Productions has auditions for readings of a stage adaptation of the best-seller "The Given Day" from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 21, and from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 25, at Center Stage Theatre, 1665 Quincy Ave., Naperville. Call (630) 355-9212 to schedule an audition time.

• PM&L Theatre has auditions for the 1964 Broadway musical "Fiddler on the Roof" at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18, and at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 19, at 877 N. Main St., Antioch. Those interested in auditioning should prepare a musical selection an be prepared to do cold readings from the script. Whole families are invited to audition. • The Lyric Opera of Chicago has dance auditions for its upcoming production of Richard Wagner's "Tannhauser," a revival of Tim Albery's London production, at noon Saturday, May 24, and at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at the Joffrey Tower, 10 E. Randolph St., Chicago. "Tannhauser" requires six solo female dancers (plus one cover) and six solo male dancers (plus one cover) with strong ballet technique and dramatic skills (the choreography involves brief moments of topless onstage nudity). • The Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra seeks student musicians for its 2014-15 season between Thursday, May 29, through Sunday, June 1. Students who will begin 4th grade through college in the fall may audition for a seat in one of the five orchestras and brass choir. There is a $45 audition fee per audition per instrument for students new to the EYSO. The fee for returning students is $35. Auditions are held at the Elgin Community College Arts Center (Building H), 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Applications, audition requirements, and scheduling may be found at eyso.org.
