Elgin man charged with having illegal gun
A 24-year-old Elgin man arrested by police during a traffic stop this week was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun, authorities said Thursday.
Police pulled over the vehicle about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday near Sherman and Illinois avenues and found the driver, David V. Madrigal, had an expired driver's license and was in possession of the loaded 9 mm handgun without a valid concealed carry permit, according to a police department news release.
A search of the vehicle yielded 37 grams of marijuana, police said.
Madrigal, of the 800 block of Nancy Ann Lane, was charged with felony counts of armed violence and unlawful possession of marijuana, and misdemeanor counts of unlawful use of a weapon (firearm in vehicle) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as traffic offenses.
His bond was set at $35,000.
