Write haiku, senryu at poetry workshop

The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop to be held from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, May 10. Led by Charlotte Digregorio, Saturday's topic will be "You Can Write and Publish Delightful Haiku and Senryu."

Charlotte Digregorio is an award-winning author of five nonfiction books and prizewinning poet of many forms. Her latest book, to be published in April 2014, is "Haiku and Senryu: A Simple Guide for All."

Her poetry has been translated into many languages. She taught languages and writing to college and graduate students for 35 years, is a writer-in-residence at universities, gives workshops at writer's conferences, and teaches haiku to students in the schools. She has hosted a radio poetry program, and is the Midwest Regional coordinator of the Haiku Society of America.

Learn the art of writing Hhaiku and senryu in English. These short poetic forms originated in Japan centuries ago. They deal with nature, the seasons, and human nature. In this fun workshop, you will learn about, the history of haiku and senryu in Japan and in the U.S.; basic stylistic and thematic elements of the forms; practical ideas on how to become inspired to write them; how to analyze and create insightful haiku and senryu (the latter is often humorous); and surefire ways of getting published.

Participants are encouraged to bring 15 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine, on the second Saturday of each month.

All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15.
