Sugar Grove woman helps celebrate World Book Night

On April 23, for World Book Night, a Sugar Grove resident visited the Dominican Literacy Center, 260 Vermont St. in Aurora, to hand out books to students and tutors. The center offers free, one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing and speaking English to immigrant women.

Amy Manion was among 25,000 volunteers nationwide who celebrated the fourth annual World Book Night, Shakespeare's birthday, by participating in giving a half million books to people who don't regularly read.

Manion presented copies of Aletha Kontis' "Enchanted," a fairy tale about a young woman who kisses an enchanted frog.

Manion picked up her books at Anderson's Book Shop in Naperville. Before her presentation, she detailed World Book Night, read excerpts, profiled the author, distributed a reading guide and bookmarks and led students in writing thank-you notes to the program.

"Enchanted" was among 35 books chosen for giving by a panel of librarians and booksellers. Book authors waived their royalties and publishers agreed to produce specially-printed World Book Night editions.
