Round Lake Ace Ryan Newman performed like one Saturday in leading the Panthers to a big North Suburban Conference Prairie Division victory in a 2-1 decision against Antioch.
Newman rolled up 13 strikeouts, allowed just 1 hit, 4 walks and no earned runs over 7 full innings.
The Panthers scored both of their runs in the third inning. Tyler Sanchez drove in one of them. Newman also led Round Lake in hits with a 2-for-3 effort from the plate. Antioch pushed across its only run on a double steal.
Mundelein 6, McHenry 5: Mundelein scored 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh to get a big come-from behind win. Luke Peterson drove in 2 runs and the Sam Osisek followed with a walk-off double that drove in 2 runs. Luke Adams with 2-for-2 with a double and triple for the Mustangs and Nick Brune and Ryan Hollander each went 2-for-3. Pitcher Austin Blackmer got the win for the Mustangs, who improve to 22-1.
Libertyville 7, St. Francis 1: Libertyville jumped on the scoreboard early and often, scoring all seven of its runs over the first two innings. Noah Greenberg, Mitch Townsend and Evan Skoug each had 2 hits for the Wildcats. Townsend had a double, as did Matt Reed. Pitcher Patrick Wales got the win. He had 3 strikeouts in four innings.
Vernon Hills 13, Wheeling 1 (5): Less than 24 hours after allowing a seventh-inning lead to slip away in a heartbreaking loss to Mundelein, Vernon Hills rebounded in a big way. Nine different players pounded out 14 hits, including five extra base hits. Pat Crowley went 3-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBI. Jake Boyer, Connor McNamara and John Goehrke each had 2 hits, including a triple and 3 RBI for McNamara and a double for Goehrke. Crowley was also the winning pitcher, upping his record on the mound to 5-3. He allowed no runs and only 1 hit over three innings. He also struck out three batters and walked none.
Buffalo Grove 5, Stevenson 1: Stevenson got only 2 hits (from Michael Banakis and Justin Happ) in its nonconference loss to Buffalo Grove.
Carmel splits: Carmel split its East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader with Joliet Catholic, 10-4 and 3-7. In the first game, Carmel rolled up 14 hits, thanks to 3 hits from Nick Grandolfo and Ian Kristan and 2 hits from Joseph Santoro and Quentin Sefcik. Kristan got 2 doubles and Andrew Kantor and Santoro also had doubles. Sefcik had a triple. In the second game, Carmel was out-hit 10-6. Santoro and Sefcik had 2 hits each.
