Jazz Consortium and Barrington H.S. Big Bands for Mother's Day at Durty Nellie's Pub

Big Band jazz, menu specials and a flower for the first 25 moms are on tap for Mother's Day, May 11, at Durty Nellie's Pub, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. The Barrington High School Rithum Machine, directed by Randy Karon, will perform at 6 p.m., followed by the Jazz Consortium Big Band from 6:30-9 p.m. Food service is available throughout the evening, so moms can take in the Big Band sounds while enjoying special menu selections. The show is for all ages, with a $10 cover, $5 17 and under with student ID. Reservations suggested at 847.358.9150 ext. 0, website www.durtynellies.com.

This is the third year of the Jazz Consortium featuring a local high school jazz band before its regular monthly show. The students get to perform live in a real club setting, and having it fall on Mother's Day this month is a special bonus.

Finishing its third year of residency at Durty Nellie's, the Jazz Consortium Big Band's brassy mix of 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxes and rhythm section has been so well-received that both levels of the club are regularly filled with patrons enjoying the sounds of the classic and modern Big Bands.

The Jazz Consortium Big Band (www.jcbigband.com) first came together in the mid-1970's, consisting of former and current University of Illinois, Northern Illinois University and Northwestern University musicians with a love of Big Band music. The group went on to perform at jazz clubs, nightspots and concerts throughout Chicagoland, including an appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival.

The Jazz Consortium disbanded in the early 1980's, with most of the members going on to full-time music careers. The band reunited four years ago, and has since been performing second Sundays monthly at Durty Nellie's in Palatine, as well as playing various concerts and clubs in the area.
