Prospect, Wheeling High Schools holding spring musicals

Spring musicals are coming to Prospect and Wheeling High Schools this week.

At Prospect, "Shrek the Musical," began Tuesday and runs through Saturday, May 3, with performances at 7 p.m. on April 30-May 3 and a matinee at noon on May 3 at the school, 801 Kensington Road, Mount Prospect.

Students at Wheeling are performing "RENT School Edition" in the school's Robert Sang theater at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, May 1-3, at 900 S. Elmhurst Road.

Shrek is played by senior Josh Arshonsky and his loyal steed Donkey is played by senior Leanne Gadow, who set off on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) Princess Fiona, played by senior Jennifer Ruda, from her tower, guarded by a fire-breathing, lovesick dragon, played by senior Mary Godby. Lord Farquaad is played by junior James Farquharson.

General admissions tickets are $10 and may sell out as there are more than 140 students involved in the production. For information on reserving tickets, contact Sandy Ghilarducci at (847) 718-5222.

Wheeling is the first school in Northwest Suburban District 214 to perform "RENT," Director Stephen Colella said.

It follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

The cast, crew, and band have partnered with the Aids Foundation of Chicago to donate 10 percent of proceeds.

The cast is led by senior Sam Yoshino as Roger, Angela Jordan as Mimi, Marco Mazzetta as Mark, Shannon Richards as Maureen, Maggie Monaxios as Joanne, Ron Roth as Angel and Aaron Jung as Tom Collins.

Admission is $10 for general seating. For ticket information, contact Ann Wyatt at Ann.Wyatt@d214.org.
