NAMI Kane County North to celebrate 'Iris Day'

NAMI Kane County North celebrates "Iris Day" Saturday, May 3.

In 1949, Mental Health America launched Mental Health Week, which eventually became Mental Health Month, with the Jaycees to educate Americans about mental illness and mental health.

Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. During the month of May, NAMI and the rest of the country are bringing awareness to mental illness.

In 2013, President Obama proclaimed May as National Mental Health Awareness Month and brought the issue of mental health to the forefront of our nation's thoughts.

In conjunction with this monthlong event, volunteers from NAMI Kane County North will be at tables outside the entrances at the South Elgin Jewel Store, 375 Randall Road, Saturday, May 3.

This event is deemed "Iris Day." The iris is traditionally a symbol of hope and the official symbol of NAMI Kane County North.

Volunteers will offer brochures and information about mental illnesses and support, as well as Iris bookmarks. Donations will be used to further NAMI's goals of education, support and advocacy for persons with mental illness and their families.
