Cubs' Wood gets it done on the mound, the plate

Apparently Travis Wood can do it all for the Cubs.

He did Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field in a 5-1 Cubs victory.

Wood pitched 7 solid innings of 6-hit, 1-run ball. That's his job.

But if you ask him, so are all the other aspects of baseball. Wood also helped himself and his team by hitting a 3-run home run in the second inning and adding an RBI double in the fourth. The home run was the seventh of Wood's career.

"Anything I can I do to help the team and help myself out there," said Wood, who is 1-2 with a 2.52 ERA. "I'm not just out there in the 9-hole to fill a spot. You've got to try to be the best you can at it."

Although Wood grounded into an inning-ending double play in the sixth, he prompted D'Backs manager Kirk Gibson to lift his starting pitcher, Bronson Arroyo, and bring in J.J. Putz. Wood took a couple of big hacks and forced catcher Miguel Montero to make a trip to the mound to have a word with Putz.

"He was a one-man wrecking crew," said Cubs manager Rick Renteria, whose team is 6-12.

Wood was sharp from the get-go, striking out four over the first two innings, mainly on a good fastball.

His home run in the second was 1 of 4 hits in the inning. Welington Castillo drove in the other run with a single.

The shutout bid for Wood ended in the seventh, when Mark Trumbo crushed a home run deep into the left-center field bleachers.

Rehabbing for Daytona:

Right-handed pitcher Jake Arrieta worked 5⅔ innings Monday in a rehab start for the Cubs' Class A Daytona club against Clearwater.

He gave up 5 hits and 5 runs (3 earned) while walking two, striking out seven and giving up 3 home runs. Arrieta is recovering from a shoulder ailment that has bothered him from the beginning of spring training.

It's possible he could make one more rehab start before being activated. When he comes back, he'll replace Carlos Villanueva in the Cubs starting rotation.

"I think we'll see where he's at after he throws," said Rick Renteria. "I can't project for you his schedule, his timetable. I just know he's progressing well."
