Inverness Tree Commission Holds Art Contest

The Village of Inverness will celebrate Arbor Day and the Village's 23rd year as a Tree City USA on Monday, May 5, at 4:30 p.m. at Village Hall. There will be a tree-planting ceremony, refreshments, Arbor Day mementos and a tree raffle. The observance will be held rain or shine. For the raffle, one entry per family will be accepted, and participants must be present to enter and to win. Entrants should be prepared to take their trees with them should they win.

In conjunction with the celebration, the Inverness Tree Commission is holding a contest for the best original drawing for the Arbor Day program cover. The winner will receive a plaque and a $50 VISA gift card.

Design requirements for the program cover are:

8½ x 11-inch paper

Color drawing

Hand-drawn, using any medium

To be considered, the drawing must include the phrases:

Inverness Arbor Day 2014 and Tree City USA 23 Years

Artists must be 6 to 12 years old to enter. Please list the artist's name, telephone number and age on the back of the drawing. Drawings must be received at Village Hall, 1400 Baldwin Road, by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25.

The Village of Inverness has received the Tree City designation for 23 consecutive years because it has complied with all of the Tree City USA guidelines: The village has a tree commission, a community tree ordinance, a community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance. Participation in the Tree City USA program has resulted in the planting and preservation of several thousand trees in the village.

Whether you are able to attend the event or not, you are encouraged to plant a tree in honor of Arbor Day, a practice that is more important than ever as trees are lost to the emerald ash borer. Trees produce oxygen, clean the air, provide cooling shade, offer shelter and food for wildlife, reduce noise pollution, and make cities more pleasant and homes more valuable.

Please call Village Hall at 847-358-7740 with any questions about the contest or celebration.
